Blowfish Malibu Spotlight: Allie Woerner

Get to know Marketing Communications Manager at Blowfish Malibu, Allie Woerner.

Thanks for taking the time to meet with us, Allie! We’re excited to learn more about your role at Blowfish Malibu, what inspires you, and what excites you about the future with the brand.

Read on to learn more about Allie:

Tell us about your role at Blowfish Malibu.

I am the Marketing Communications Manager for Blowfish Malibu. My job basically centers around all things social media and community on a global level. From managing all of our social media platforms and handling all outside communication with influencers and content creators to working with our PR companies and planning and hosting in-person events. My job revolves around building relationships and being a face for the brand. I’m also able to put my English degree to use on the daily, as I’m responsible for writing all of the brand copy.

When did you first become interested in Marketing?

I feel like I was always destined to wind up in marketing, in some way or another! I was an avid blogger throughout college, and after attending a conference put on by Teen Vogue in New York (like 10 years ago now, sheesh), I realized I could actually apply what I was doing for my personal blog for a fashion brand. After that, it’s all I ever wanted to do. I took a handful of marketing classes in college. But ultimately, the more I worked in fashion after I graduated, the more I realized that working with a marketing team was the right path for me. And now we’re here!

What did you do previously before joining the Blowfish Malibu team?

I’ve been all over the place! I always knew that I wanted to work in fashion since I’ve been obsessed with all things-style since high school. I’m one of those people who has been lucky enough to be able to try out a myriad of positions. After graduating from college, I was the visual manager of a high-end retail store before landing a job as a receptionist with the eyewear brand, Oliver Peoples. I quickly moved up there, ultimately working in sales/operations for the fashion sunglass division. Forever 21 Corporate then recruited me to work in the buying department, which I did for a few months before realizing that wasn’t for me.

After that, I landed at K-Swiss, where I worked my way from a Customer Service rep to managing all of the larger retailer E-Comm sales accounts. Then I was promoted to a digital marketing assistant, and ultimately, I wound up helping to run the website for two of the in-house brands there as an E-Commerce Marketing Manager.

Whew! It’s been a long road!

How did you get started with Blowfish Malibu?

I wish I could give you some Cinderella story of how I came to be working here, but honestly, I applied for the position on a whim on LinkedIn two years ago! A few weeks later, I got an email from Karen (the VP of Marketing) and we set up a phone interview. I was brought in for an in-person interview – and I landed the position! We weren’t really sure how the position would evolve since I was initially just hired to manage our social media channels. But my oh my, has it evolved into quite the position – one I’m very proud to hold.

What creative projects at the brand have you been working on that you’re excited about? Can you tell us about them?

We had SO many fun projects lined up before everything got shut down due to Covid-19. As a result, a lot of those were unfortunately postponed to a later date. One major thing I really enjoy about my job is the events, and I was pleasantly surprised at how much I love putting them together. I’m really excited about getting back on the road (when it’s safe!) to host our Road Trip series. (Shopping events at different independent boutiques across the country.) I’m also looking forward to traveling internationally to produce events to promote our brand in Europe.

What do you like most about working in the fashion industry?

Everything? Is that an appropriate answer?

But for reals, I love how expressive it is, and how I explore my creativity on a daily basis. I love the fact that a lot of it is “anything goes” and that we’re okay to try new things on the regular. I love that I work with a lot of people who appreciate the same things that I appreciate (like designers, shoes, bags, etc.), and who are always down to talk fashion. Also, I am a HUGE shoe person, so it’s literally a dream to be able to come into work and get to talk about shoes every day. The fashion industry has been my entire professional life for the past 8 years, so it’s safe to say that it’s a world I really like working in.

What’s your favorite part of your job?

In general, I’m a very social person. I’m an avid talker and a communicator, so to be able to do those things on a daily basis is something that I do not take for granted. I love being able to make new connections with girls all over the world, who are fans of the brand, and who I actually now consider to be friends.

The Blowfish Malibu offices are in LA. What’s your favorite thing about the city?

LA is such a hodgepodge of activity, that it’s impossible to find yourself with NOTHING to do. From the beaches to the shopping, to the restaurants to the different neighborhoods you can explore – you can always find something to fill your time. As someone from the area, it blows my mind of how many things I still haven’t crossed off my list. I have friends scattered all over the city so exploring things on their side of town can always be an adventure. Plus I can always turn to them for recommendations.

Which is your favorite pair of Blowfish Malibu shoes?

I’m a sucker for the sneakers. They’re all so comfortable and classic and literally go with everything in your closet.

What advice would you have for someone who’s trying to pursue the same career as you?

Do everything. All of it. If you get offered a job, and it’s not necessarily where you see yourself, take it. Because you never know who you’ll meet or which positions could open up while you’re there. I have learned this incredible post-college education on fashion and business after accepting various positions and soaking up knowledge as best I could. Help wherever you can, stay late to finish a project and just do what it takes to make your department successful. People always notice hard-workers and believe me when I say that, usually, hard work pays off.

Also, just be a nice human. Being nice and friendly to the people you work with goes a long way in accomplishing your career goals. Trust me.

JUST FOR FUN

What was the last thing you were obsessed with?

Quarantine skincare! I went on a bit of an Amazon spree and researched a bunch of skincare dupes to more expensive products. So far, so good!

Where are you from and how has that shaped you?

I’m from a small, suburban town called Moorpark, just North of Los Angeles. My Dad works in news/media, so growing up, we were always going into the city to do fun things that had to do with his job. I think living so close to a major city, but still growing up in a small town, allowed me to chase my dreams but still stay relatively grounded and appreciate the beauty behind slowing down.

What’s your dream travel destination?

My Grandmother is Colombian, so I’ve always wanted to visit and make a South America trip out of it (I’d love to see Brazil and Peru while I’m there!). I’d also love to go to Croatia, Russia, more parts of Africa… the list is endless.

If you could have lunch with anyone, living or dead, who would it be?

Nelson Mandela. I’ve been so fascinated with him since I was 14, and even visited South Africa with school back in 2012.

When do you feel best about yourself?

When I have a great tan in the summer.

What’s your personal motto?

C’est la vie. That’s life. I have to consistently remind myself that there’s no point in stressing over things that are out of my control.

What’s a fun fact about you most people don’t know?

I can read an entire book in one night if I want to. Reading and retaining information is my superpower, I think. Retaining information comes in especially handy with work. I have to remember so many things about the girls we work with! Let’s just say I have A LOT of people’s shoe sizes memorized haha.

FILL IN THE BLANK!

I learn the most from: Books & articles. I’m always, always reading something.
I can’t live without: Travel! It’s the only thing you can buy that actually makes you richer.
You can find me shopping at: Madewell & Nordstrom.
My astrological sign is: Libra.
I’m scared of: I get freaked out when I start to think too much about how big the ocean or the universe is. How small we actually are, in relation to things like that. I can find myself falling into a hole, and then I find myself up till 4am Googling things.
The last book I read was: All the Ugly and Wonderful Things by Bryn Greenwood
Most people would say I’m: Outgoing. Easy to get along with. Organized. Indecisive (the libra in me).
I’m currently listening to: The new Lady Gaga “Rain on Me” song has been on serious repeat lately. Can’t wait for the album!
My style mantra is: You can never go wrong with a great pair of denim, a white tee, and some cute shoes.
I feel most comfortable: When I’m in a beachside town, spending the day shopping, grabbing lunch or coffee with friends and just enjoying nice weather. Nothing beats that.
When I woke up today I felt: Like it was another day in Groundhog Day. I’m currently camped out at my parents’ house during Quarantine. Being in my childhood home all the time feels like the same day, every day. I’m re-living an 8th-grade summer. At least there’s work to keep me occupied!
Most people don’t know: I used to do beauty pageants when I was younger! I was Miss Santa Barbara County and Miss Moorpark back in the day and even competed at Miss California.
I feel the freest when: I’m at the pool or the beach with a good book, just lounging in the sunshine.

Thank you, Allie! We’ll catch up with you soon.

Sandal season is finally here, my friends!

I am so excited to announce that it’s finally that time of the year again – sandal (and pedicure) season! We can finally bring our sandals and wedges back into the mix to pair with slip dresses, cut off shorts, and summer jumpers. We love how versatile our sandals are – ranging from strappy to full coverage and micro-wedge to super wedge. Dress them up, dress them down, wear them all over town. Check out a few of our favorite sandal picks so far this year for outfit inspiration from some Blowfish Malibu babes.

Blowfish Malibu Style We Can’t Get Enough Of!

New year, fresh looks. Inspiring style brought to you by some of our favorite Blowfish Malibu babes.

The majority of us use a new year to reflect on the past. Some people may choose to create resolutions and set goals, while others may use this time to simply be inspired.  A new year presents us a clean slate and in turn gives us hope for the future. Out with the old, in with the new, right? These newly set intentions and thoughts weave through various parts of our lives;  from health and wellness, to financial resolutions, travel goals, and style. Because we are fashion-obsessed (duh), this week we’re looking for inspiring, new ways to update our wardrobe for the new year. With every new season, we rely on some of our favorite Blowfish Malibu babes who rock their looks (and their Blowfish Malibu kicks) to encourage fun change.

This means we’re headed to IG to hunt down fresh looks to inspire and revamp our style.

Find inspiration below!

Love Island’s adorable @lauraloucrane is rocking her Ralo boot, available at Office Shoes in Europe. We love how she paired these boots with a leather jacket and vintage tee.

@theangelajones lovessss her Mondo sneakers and wears them while running around Los Angeles any chance she gets. We are totally feeling the camo jacket paired with denim cut-offs. Plus, that high ponytail is killing it.

We don’t think we’ll ever get over the Bungalow sandal (a year-round favorite, if you ask us!), and @lularoeashelymickelson is rocking hers like summer never ended! PS. how amazing is that floral duster!?

@ashleerosehartley is one of the cutest girls on the ‘gram. It’s no surprise we can’t get over how well she styled one of our classic styles: Balla.

We’ve got a massive crush on @jeskenyon and can’t get over how well she styled our beloved Play sneaker. Can we get this outfit for ourselves, ASAP? LOVE the long sweater and sneaker combo.

Comfort + casual + effortless + modern = the perfect look. We love how @jasinez paired her adorable grey slip-on’s with cute denim trousers and an on-trend mustard sweater!

@theclumsytraveler is a great friend to the brand, and she effortlessly rocks our favorite shoes throughout the year. Check her out on the Santa Monica pier in a pair of on-trend neutral booties! They look perfect with her cuffed boyfriend jeans and casual, yet feminine, white tee.

@vanessa_la_blanche is making us feel “50 shades of jealous” with this fresh, winter-approved ensemble. We need grey booties ASAP.

We don’t know what we love more: @jeskenyon in her comfy Play sneakers this season or that yummy latte she’s drinking!

Feeling inspired? Which looks would you rock this year?

The Best Instagram-Worthy Places to Shoot in LA

Blowfish Malibu brings you a list of the best places to shoot in LA. Trust us, your Instagram will thank you.

From fanciful movie set locations to museums and vibrant murals, the city is covered in allurement. If you’re a born and raised Californian, you might have heard of some of these places already. However, if you have never been, get ready to jot down a list of places you must visit on your next California venture. Just don’t forget your camera, iPhone, and smile — these are our favorite places to shoot in LA.

This list includes architectural gems like the The Getty Center and The Getty Museum, outstanding vista points like the Hollywood Sign, and world-famous landmarks like the Santa Monica Pier.

Santa Monica Pier

@nallelysphotography

One of the hottest locations to visit during your stay in LA is Santa Monica. Unmistakably fun and photogenic, the pier is one of the most iconic and recognizable landmarks in all of LA. Visit to snap photos in front of the ferris wheel, crafty restaurants, or the shoreline. It also has vibrant, beautiful pink and orange sunset views.

Venice Beach

Just south of Santa Monica is the famous beach city of Venice. Venice Beach is a great location to gain some inspiration or to snap some fun pictures. Take in the artistic, bright and creative murals as you take a stroll on the boardwalk.

The Hollywood Walk of Fame

@nallelysphotography

Looking for more of a city vibe? Then the Hollywood Walk of Fame is a great location for you to visit —  just make sure you have your camera in hand. The Hollywood Walk of Fame is all about the visiting the pink star of an actor or musician who has earned your admiration. And if you aren’t in it for the celebrities, the glittery terrazzo floor is a great backdrop to take a picture of your favorite pair of shoes.

The Hollywood Sign

@nallelysphotography

Whether a tourist or LA local, the Hollywood sign is a great location for anyone to check out. Plus, you can’t say you’ve really been to LA until you’ve seen the Hollywood Sign. The Griffith Observatory in Los Feliz has a nice view of it and you can get even closer by visiting Beachwood Dr in Hollywood.

Griffith Observatory

@nallelysphotography

Since you’ll already be checking out the Hollywood sign, perhaps you can stop by The Griffith Observatory for a great glimpse of the priceless views. The Griffith Observatory is one of LA’s most iconic buildings and offers some of the best views of the city from its balconies and observation decks, with sight lines all the way to Palos Verdes on a clear day.

The Getty Center & Museum

@nallelysphotography
                                                                  @gettyvilla

Now if you think this place is beautiful, you should also consider visiting The Getty Center as well as The Getty Museum. They are both boast amazing architecture and outstanding views.

Los Angeles County Museum of Art

@sherryveryberry.l

If you are like me and truly enjoy and want to be involved in the master of art, then the Urban lights at LACMA is a great place to explore and take beautiful pictures of yourself, your family and friends. I do have to warn you though, it’s a pretty popular spot and likely to be packed with tons of people. I would recommend visiting this location early in the morning or late at night so as to avoid the inevitable tourist photobomb.

Melrose Drive and Rodeo Drive

@luca_ssiqueira; @mrs.glukhov; @jassyjian

Furthermore, if you like to shop and take cute pictures while you’re at it, then Melrose and Rodeo Drive are great places for you.

Melrose is where all the LA street fashion started. It’s also filled with beautiful gems like the infamous pink wall, the butterfly wings, and the Made in LA mural. Not to mention, Melrose has great thrift stores and yummy restaurants.

On the other hand, you have Beverly Hills/ Rodeo Drive, where all the celebrities go shopping. But also a great view of our famous Californian palm trees that look amazing in pictures.

The Beverly Hills Hotel

@graymalin;@debodoes;@oddwie;@saltyluxe

If you need a place to stay, you have the Beverly Hills Hotel right in the same area. This hotel is literally a living museum space. Everything in there is beautiful and photogenic. Many brands, bloggers, and photographers book a room to get amazing shots.

LA has so many beautiful famous and hidden gems. Now that you have heard some of our favorite spots to shoot, we want to know where you love to visit for the perfect Instagram shot!

Malibu Mondays with Natasha Mira

We have a serious girl crush on our Blowfish Malibu babe of the week, Natasha Mira.

One thing is for sure. Natasha Mira is one talented girlboss who is constantly on the hustle. Raised in Los Angeles, Natasha spent the better part of the past decade creating content of all sorts, for all sorts. In her limited spare time, she’s a producer, song writer, fashionista and collaborator, partnering with similar creators and producers across Southern California. Oh, and her day job? She’s a Creative Marketing Manager at the legendary entertainment company, Lionsgate. (NBD.) Natasha shapes the creative direction for Lionsgate Premiere’s trailers, key art, and other marketing materials.

We sent her a few pairs of Blowfish Malibu kicks to add to her ever-growing collection. She spent some time running around her favorite spots in California to document her love for the shoes. In her words: “I was able to run all day around Santa Monica Pier, in and out of the sand, and into the ocean and these sandals remained in PRISTINE condition. I couldn’t believe it! I’ve been telling all my friends about how great the brand is.”

Aww, thanks girl! And now, everyone, meet Natasha. You’re about to be as obsessed with her as we are.

How has living in Los Angeles shaped you?

It is definitely a wonderful place to meet like-minded creative people. Studying at USC opened a lot of doors to meeting with filmmakers and creative partners who I still collaborate with today! Although I’ve lived most of my life in California, I would say I have a European soul at heart. My mother, Ilona Europa is Polish, and a singer/songwriter and radio host of her own show Accent On! on LA Talk Radio! Her creative influence has definitely shaped my art, music, and style! (www.ilonaeuropacreative.com)

How would you describe your personal style?

I switch between two extremes! I love tailored, sharp, and structured clothing that has a very polished feel, and then embellish my outfits with strong pieces like a unique blazer or pair of shoes. Ninety percent of my closet is filled with statement shoes and jackets! At the other end of the spectrum, I love whimsical dresses that are effortless and super feminine. It’s fun to play with style and really stand out.

I love how Rachel Zoe plays with fashion. I read an article on her the other day, and she described her style in a few words: “glamorous, timeless, effortless.” I think that sums up the outfits I try to put together for myself as well!

What was the last thing you were obsessed with?

Scones <3

What creative projects have you been working on that you’re excited about? Can you tell us about them?

I’m working on my debut album, CINEPHONIC, which I plan on debuting in the beginning of 2019. CINEPHONIC is truly the embodiment of music I’ve been writing for the past few years. I feel like I’ve been growing and preparing for this moment, and I’m so excited to share my own vision with the world. This is the first project that I’m completely directing. From producing photoshoots and music video shoots, to writing the songs, and to giving notes on the arrangements. I’m touching every aspect of this album.

My first single “Calling Out to Me” was a great introduction to the concept and power behind the word: CINEPHONIC (cinematic/symphonic music), but I think listeners will be surprised that I also have several songs that are more cerebral, subdued, and haunting. The entire album will vary in style and intensity, but they will all have emotive orchestrations with a singer-songwriter melody in common. Check out the video HERE!

I’m working on another music video concept currently with Armand Nour (my cinematographer for Calling Out to Me). I hope to release a few more singles over the coming months to keep everyone up to date on the full album before it debuts! I’m so excited to be working with producers from around the world (Dan Solovitz, Bob Weitz and Ilona Europa– USA, Michael Summ – Germany, Jonasz Wiewior and Patryk Scelina – Poland).

Armand Nour and Jaqui Gaball are also working with me to help shape the photography around my album. They both have very different styles and aesthetics which I love! Working together is really inspiring, and they both were the photographers behind my shoots for Blowfish Malibu! Armand shot me in the yellow sandals and Jaqui shot me in the white Marley sneakers – and I’m so beyond happy with how both shoots came out!

What’s your philosophy on social media and how do you approach it?

I use social media as a way to connect with people around the world, and to make opportunities for myself. I love taking chances and reaching out to brands, talented musicians, and people who inspire me. One of the songs on my album is actually from Patryk Scelina, a composer from Poland who I’ve never actually met. I came across his music online when I was promoting my music video, and fell in love with a song he produced called “Invisible Hero.” Social media provided the platform to reach out to Patryk to collaborate, and I wrote a song to his instrumental. Now “Invisible Hero” will be on my album, and we’re recording in the studio next week. We’ve been able to video chat and discuss the session all through social media, it’s incredible.

Do you have a favorite social media platform?

Instagram and Facebook are my go-tos!

What’s your dream travel destination?

I fell in love with London. My dream would be to live in the U.K. or Poland someday and experience living and working abroad.

If you could have dinner with anyone, living or dead, who would it be?

Imogen Heap or Lin Manuel Miranda. I think both are creative geniuses and I have so many questions about their creative processes!

What’s your personal motto?

I’d rather be busy than bored!

What are your thoughts on Blowfish Malibu shoes? Do you have a favorite pair?

I’ll be honest. I am obsessed with shoes, but I have a REALLY hard time finding shoes I love that are comfortable. I’ll probably try on 20 pairs of shoes at a store, and none of them fit just right. I was shocked when both Blowfish Malibu’s white Marley sneakers, and the yellow sandals fit me perfectly.

When do you feel best about yourself?

I have a list of goals that I continually add on to with both big and small dreams. Checking things off that list gives me a sense of accomplishment that I’m growing, challenging, and investing in myself.

What advice would you have for someone who’s trying to pursue the same interests as you?

Don’t compare yourself to anyone. There’s so much talent in the world that it can become overwhelming to some people, but I don’t look at amazing people as competition. I see talented people as an opportunity to connect, collaborate, and learn from their strengths. At the end of the day, if you feel good about what you’re putting out into the universe, I think the world will respond positively to that.

If you weren’t a content creator, what would you be?

I love marketing. When I’m not making content myself, working to promote other artist’s amazing content is what I’m pursuing alongside my own personal dreams.

Fill in the Blank!

I learn the most from: My mother, Ilona Europa!

I can’t live without: GOOD FOOD! I’m a huge foodie!

You can find me shopping at: Zara!!

My astrological sign is: Taurus. I’m 100% a Taurus – but I’m only stubborn if you’re wrong 😉

I’m not scared of: Change.

Most people would say I’m: Loyal.

I’m currently listening to: Imogen Heap, Coldplay, and Woodkid.

My style mantra is: Clothing doesn’t have to be expensive to look expensive.

I feel most comfortable in: A long flowy dress.

When I woke up today I felt: Energized! So many creative projects are in the works, it keeps me inspired.

Most people don’t know: I started teaching dance in middle school and taught for 10 years until I graduated college.

I feel the most free when: I’m walking through the streets of Europe, and exploring new places. Nothing is more freeing than feeling like you can go anywhere in the world.
