Although the circumstances this year are totally different than what we’re used to – we’re still embracing summer style as best we can. Get to know from a designer’s perspective about Blowfish Malibu’s more eco-conscious collections!
We sat down with one of our lead designers, Marcy Cail, and asked her a few questions about the line, her inspiration and how she and the team were able to design our Vegan line.
What journey did the design team take to create the collections?
The road to designing more eco-conscious product is bumpier than you’d think because its fairly new and unpaved in the fashion industry. There is definitely a lot of trial and error involved. Some ideas work, some do not. For example, it’s possible for hardware to be made from recycled metals and we looked into replacing the buckles on our shoes with this option. However, we found that those materials are not always controlled and therefore may not pass a chemical test – which is a scary thought!
Its very important to move towards creating cleaner, better product, but its even more important to be responsible when doing so. That’s why designing more eco-conscious products is an on-going experience for everyone.
What materials are considered “vegan”?
Currently, the most widely-used faux leather option in footwear is polyurethane, which is man-made material, and can be produced to closely replicate leather. Beyond this, some interesting materials being used to replicate leather are made from organic materials such as apple cores and pineapples! But even organic faux leathers bring up concerns on how these will impact the environment agriculturally.
Our whole design team at Blowfish Malibu is really loving apple core, pineapple, cereal grain, and grape skin based leathers. These are newer (and very cool) material options that we hope will shape the future. However, the biggest challenge for us using these materials is that they are more expensive. Footwear options currently using these organic based faux leathers retail beyond our budget and we have to stick to that budget in order to offer affordable choices for our customers.
We hope organic faux leathers become an industry standard we can afford to offer our customers soon, until then, most of the materials we use are man-made.
Which vegan leather options are used on Blowfish Malibu products?
There are lots of material options that can be used that are considered vegan, such as canvas and microfiber. However, the possibilities for ‘faux leathers’ are a bit more limited and tricky. The materials we use in our Blowfish Malibu vegan collection vary from style to style. Most of our shoes are currently made with polyurethane or canvas.
What is the design team doing to find more eco-conscious vegan material options?
Our team is constantly working with other industry leaders on sourcing new material options. It’s an on-going project, a real learning process, but most importantly, its bringing change to the world. Therefore, this is something we work to improve everyday.

Our Fall vegan collection is live!
We are so excited to announce that we launched our Fall vegan collection last week! We are proud to say that this entire collection is officially registered as vegan with The Vegan Society. So, in quintessential Blowfish Malibu fashion, we invited a few of our favorite LA friends for a night of celebrating the line. Our guests enjoyed yummy vegan bites by Dish Catering LA and drinks by Big Tony Bartending. Plus, the uber stylish crowd took home with them a pair of new fall vegan shoes. (Lucky!)

Our new Vegan collection is here and you better believe we celebrated!
Last month, we gathered with some of our favorite L.A. friends to celebrate an exciting launch. We are very proud to announce our brand new Vegan Capsule Collection! This new collection of shoes feature some fan-favorite Blowfish Malibu styles. And the best part? They have all been registered as “vegan” with The Vegan Society.
What we’re most proud of as a brand is that we did not have to sacrifice style in order to make these important changes. Our designers were able to source quality vegan materials in order to keep the standard of the shoe up to par with what our customers have come to love and expect.
We gathered at an adorable location on Abbot Kinney Boulevard in Venice, where we were able to give out goodie bags valued at over $200, offer delicious drinks from Vita Coco, and yummy vegan eats from cult-favorite, Butcher’s Daughter. Guests enjoyed live musical entertainment, as well as indulge in touch-ups from the vegan makeup brand, Cover FX.
Overall, we’re incredibly excited about this new collection and are ecstatic to be able to share some great shots from the event below. Stay tuned for more vegan news from Blowfish Malibu!

We’re excited to announce that Blowfish Malibu has officially gone vegan!
Over the last few years, fashion companies have been making a shift to move from leather to vegan leather. With more focus and attention on sustainability and decreasing one’s carbon footprint, taking this new route has proved very popular among fashion lovers, companies, and activists alike. That’s why we are so proud to announce that some of our newest styles have been registered and 100% approved by The Vegan Society. (Woop woop!)
The Vegan Society was established in 1944 in the UK and is the oldest registered vegan charity in the world. They define their purpose as, “a philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude — as far as is possible and practicable— all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose; and by extension, promotes the development and use of animal-free alternatives for the benefit of humans, animals and the environment.” We are happy to be a part of such a wonderful organization!
We thought spring and summer would be the perfect time to unveil our new vegan designs. Our sandals feature some of the hottest silhouettes for warm weather and they are ultra comfortable, as always. If you are looking for faux leather styles, keep an eye out for the “Certified Vegan” sticker.
