Behind the Scenes: A Sweet Summer Soiree

Hallelujah, summer is here!

It’s officially our favorite season of the year! Sweet, sunny summer. To celebrate the launch of summer 2019, we invited a bunch of our favorite gals to Malibu Café, a gem hidden away in the hills of Malibu, California. This cute, rustic country mart is the place for yummy local eats and refreshing, cool drinks.

Our uber-fashionable guests enjoyed games, tasty food, delicious drinks. It was awesome to see the gals socialize with each other as well as representatives from the brand. So many smiles, laughs, and great conversation! A huge highlight for guests was being able to check out the upcoming product from our Blowfish Malibu Europe line. Trust us, there are some cuties in there! But one of our favorite moments of the evening was being able to teach our European friends how to make a proper American s’more! It’s quite incredible to see the face of someone eating a s’more for the first time. Let’s just say we may have started an obsession.

For more on the evening, check out the photos below!

Go Behind the Scenes of our Fall/Winter 2019 Photoshoot

Step behind the scenes of our Fall/Winter photoshoot.

It’s everyone’s favorite time of year again: campaign photoshoot time! We spent multiple days this past week collecting all of our top styles for Fall/Winter 2019 and shooting them in a new location for the brand: Downtown LA. We’re so excited about this new direction! The new collection of shoes is edgier and more fashion-forward than it’s ever been before, and we knew we needed a location to really embody that.

Enter the city skyline of Downtown LA. The LA girl is just as much a city girl as she is a beach girl, and we loved being able to capture this new side of Southern California. We worked with a variety of gorgeous models inclusive of all shapes and sizes (as well as some super cute kiddos) to help represent this new collection. Photoshoots are always incredibly difficult, both physically and mentally, but we’re always so happy with the end result. Shoutout to Matrimony Media and the other members of the team for really capturing the new direction!

We can’t wait to share the finished photos with you all once Fall rolls around! Scroll through the photos below for some BTS sneak peeks, and keep an eye out for upcoming products that we are SO excited for.

BTS: Mommy & Me Brunch

Celebrating all of the beautiful mamas out there.

Mothers all across the world deserve endless appreciation for the tireless work they do. They love, support, teach, empower, and care for their children, day in and day out. So what better way to celebrate Mother’s Day, than to shower some of our favorite local mamas with love. (And flowers! And sweets!)

For our Mommy & Me party, we recently gathered at an adorable backyard wonderland to love on all of the incredible Blowfish Malibu mothers. We teamed up with our friend Mikayla Shocks and her family to host a fabulous afternoon brunch party. The soiree was complete with a DIY flower crown bar from Walden Floral LA and a full (and delicious!) brunch menu from Dish Catering. And for extra fun, there was complimentary face painting and henna tattoos.

This party was the perfect way to celebrate Mother’s Day, as well as introduce our Blowfish Malibu Kids line to women in the LA area!

We were so thrilled to send every little gal in attendance home with a brand new pair of shoes from Blowfish Malibu Kids. In addition, the mamas received an adorable (and super handy) Blowfish Malibu denim tote to help make their busy lives a little easier.

We loved spoiling the mamas and kids in LA, and we can’t wait for the next event!

BTS: The Blowfish Malibu Vegan Capsule Launch Party

Our new Vegan collection is here and you better believe we celebrated!

Last month, we gathered with some of our favorite L.A. friends to celebrate an exciting launch. We are very proud to announce our brand new Vegan Capsule Collection! This new collection of shoes feature some fan-favorite Blowfish Malibu styles. And the best part? They have all been registered as “vegan” with The Vegan Society.

These products are 100% cruelty-free and do not contain any animal products, whatsoever.

What we’re most proud of as a brand is that we did not have to sacrifice style in order to make these important changes. Our designers were able to source quality vegan materials in order to keep the standard of the shoe up to par with what our customers have come to love and expect.

We gathered at an adorable location on Abbot Kinney Boulevard in Venice, where we were able to give out goodie bags valued at over $200, offer delicious drinks from Vita Coco, and yummy vegan eats from cult-favorite, Butcher’s Daughter. Guests enjoyed live musical entertainment, as well as indulge in touch-ups from the vegan makeup brand, Cover FX.

Overall, we’re incredibly excited about this new collection and are ecstatic to be able to share some great shots from the event below. Stay tuned for more vegan news from Blowfish Malibu!

New Year, New Shoes

New year, new you. Err… I mean, new shoes!

2019 is just around the corner, and what better way to kick off a new year than with some fresh footwear? Here are some of our top picks to help you put your best foot forward in 2019!

Vianna

We’re massive fans of this Western inspired bootie. Partner them with your favorite pair of denim and a leather jacket for a look that’s easy and effortless this January.

Koto SHR

We’re heading into the most rainy part of the year, so it’s essential that you have the gear to keep you cozy and warm while the weather outside is dismal. Koto SHR is a water-resistant shearling lined sneaker that will keep you both comfortable and dry at the same time.

Rider

Rider is hands down one of our favorite pairs of boots this season. Chunky, yet on-trend, Rider is the kind of boot that can go with everything in your closet. Whether you pair them with leggings or your trusted pair of skinny jeans, round out the look with a vintage tee and oversized sweater.

Batik

We’re ALL about adding a little bit of height to your every day look, which is why Batik is a no-brainer when it comes to ankle booties. A low profile silhouette with a wedge heel to give your outfit a boost, Batik can easily be worn day or night in 2019.

Playwire

The weather may be gloomy, but that doesn’t mean your outfit has to be. Enter Playwire: a metallic take on our favorite Play sneaker, which will help you stand out from the crowd. Pair with an all black ensemble to really let your shoes do the talking.

Mondo

Mondo is easily one of our favorite sneakers for day-to-day running around, so it’s no surprise that these made our list of must-haves for the new year. Both comfortable and functional, these are a stylish additional to any girl’s wardrobe.

Viejo

A high boot is essential for any cold weather season, and Viejo is a spectacular choice for any look. Highly reviewed by everyone who wears it, Viejo will help you ride into the warmer months with ease.

Marley

Marley will forever be our go-to sneaker, and we are obsessed with this winter floral pattern for the season. The weather outside may be dreary, but that doesn’t mean your outfit needs to be!

Blowfish Malibu Style We Can’t Get Enough Of!

New year, fresh looks. Inspiring style brought to you by some of our favorite Blowfish Malibu babes.

The majority of us use a new year to reflect on the past. Some people may choose to create resolutions and set goals, while others may use this time to simply be inspired.  A new year presents us a clean slate and in turn gives us hope for the future. Out with the old, in with the new, right? These newly set intentions and thoughts weave through various parts of our lives;  from health and wellness, to financial resolutions, travel goals, and style. Because we are fashion-obsessed (duh), this week we’re looking for inspiring, new ways to update our wardrobe for the new year. With every new season, we rely on some of our favorite Blowfish Malibu babes who rock their looks (and their Blowfish Malibu kicks) to encourage fun change.

This means we’re headed to IG to hunt down fresh looks to inspire and revamp our style.

Find inspiration below!

Love Island’s adorable @lauraloucrane is rocking her Ralo boot, available at Office Shoes in Europe. We love how she paired these boots with a leather jacket and vintage tee.

@theangelajones lovessss her Mondo sneakers and wears them while running around Los Angeles any chance she gets. We are totally feeling the camo jacket paired with denim cut-offs. Plus, that high ponytail is killing it.

We don’t think we’ll ever get over the Bungalow sandal (a year-round favorite, if you ask us!), and @lularoeashelymickelson is rocking hers like summer never ended! PS. how amazing is that floral duster!?

@ashleerosehartley is one of the cutest girls on the ‘gram. It’s no surprise we can’t get over how well she styled one of our classic styles: Balla.

We’ve got a massive crush on @jeskenyon and can’t get over how well she styled our beloved Play sneaker. Can we get this outfit for ourselves, ASAP? LOVE the long sweater and sneaker combo.

Comfort + casual + effortless + modern = the perfect look. We love how @jasinez paired her adorable grey slip-on’s with cute denim trousers and an on-trend mustard sweater!

@theclumsytraveler is a great friend to the brand, and she effortlessly rocks our favorite shoes throughout the year. Check her out on the Santa Monica pier in a pair of on-trend neutral booties! They look perfect with her cuffed boyfriend jeans and casual, yet feminine, white tee.

@vanessa_la_blanche is making us feel “50 shades of jealous” with this fresh, winter-approved ensemble. We need grey booties ASAP.

We don’t know what we love more: @jeskenyon in her comfy Play sneakers this season or that yummy latte she’s drinking!

Feeling inspired? Which looks would you rock this year?

BTS: Spring & Summer 2019 Photo Shoot!

It’s that time of year again: photo shoot season!

Our marketing team spent the beginning of November hard at work prepping to shoot our upcoming styles for Spring/Summer 2019.

One of the days on set, we spent at a beach house on Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu, California. We got there just as the day  was breaking, and was fortunate enough to see the most beautiful sunrise. We all enjoyed bagels and coffee for breakfast and then got straight to work turning the house into our photo studio for the day!

This shoot was particularly fun, as we got to host a plethora of little ladies on set! Working with kids can be challenging, but these girls were a dream and we all had blast entertaining them in between shots. How cute are they!? (And, I mean, just look at all the adorable mini Blowfish Malibu shoes!)

The details in the house that we shot at were impeccable. Details, like the surfing book pictured below, can really add a lot of specialness to a shot. (The book definitely made it into to images!) And how great is that wooden walkway in the sand (pictured below)? All these little details really help to add to the bigger picture.

We were lucky to work with a super talented photographer again. We’ve been working with Andrew and the team from Matrimony Media for a while now, so whenever we have a shoot, it’s like hanging out with old friends who we don’t get to see very often. There’s lots of goofing around in between outfit changes, but when we need to get to work, we get it done.

Take a look at our photo shoot behind the scenes below!

Overall, shooting in Malibu is always a great time – as it’s our home! All of us love being on the beach and find any excuse we possibly can to escape to our little paradise along the Pacific Ocean.

The Shoes you Need for the Rest of Fall

A comprehensive and fun list of our favorite shoes you need for the rest of fall.

The girls over here at Blowfish Malibu might be suckers for summer, but we love fall fashion. We want to walk you through some of our favorite Blowfish Malibu styles for fall and break down the perfect way of wearing them. Plus, we promise all of these looks are beach approved.

Keep reading to see our list of shoes you need right now.

Style: Batik

Wedge booties are having a major moment this fall, and Batik will be the ultimate style for all of your feminine looks. Pair with a long sleeved mini dress, some peekaboo socks, and an oversized hat for a look that’s both flirty and California cool.

Style: Chomper

Our take on the classic combat boot, Chomper is an adorable look for our tomgirls. Paired with a pair of distressed jeans and a moto jacket (ocean optional), Chomper is a boot that you will keep reaching for as soon as the weather cools down.

Style: Vianna

The western trend is huge this fall, with cowboy boots taking over the feet of most fashion bloggers on the planet. Vianna is a Blowfish Malibu boot with a western twist — a classic silhouette with some braided detailing that makes these irresistible. Pair with an overall dress and a striped turtleneck for a modern take on this fresh style.

Style: Rider

Okay, we have to admit something. We’re obsessed with the Rider boot and it’s easy to see why. The perfect balance of chunky and feminine, Rider will easily go with everything in your closet. Located in California? Throw yours on with a pair of cutoffs and an oversized grandpa cardigan.

Style: Camper

If you are looking to opt out of boots this fall, then snag a pair of super cute high-tops instead! Camper, available at Buckle, is an intricate high top that is anything but basic. The two-tone colorway can easily go with any beachside inspired look. We paired ours with classic black skinnies, a grey tee and an oversized denim jacket. (Did someone say Fall uniform?)

Style: San Fran

San Fran is so not just a city in Northern California anymore. These laser cut booties are the only pair of shoes we’ve been wearing in the office. Paired with a seasonally colored dress and a fitted blazer, this is a pair of shoes that can work just as easily in the evenings as they work in the day. Grab ’em fast!

Style: Sistee

A classic bootie is a must-have each Fall/Winter and you seriously don’t need to look any further than Sistee. A classic ankle boot with some buckle details, Sistee definitely won’t let you down. Pair with your favorite pair of denim and a black tee, and make sure to remember your LA Dodger’s hat as you run out the door!

Which style is your favorite? Let us know!

Behind the Scenes: The Blowfish Malibu Global Meeting

July 8-10 this year marked the first time we have ever had our global team gathered all in one place. We discussed global  business strategy, our vision, and what’s coming next for Blowfish Malibu. Read on to take a look behind the scenes…

“What is important for everyone to take away from the meeting is an understanding of who we are as a brand consistently, and what makes us different from the rest,” says Karen Bueno, Blowfish Malibu’s VP of Marketing.  After the three days of meetings, she states, “there was also a focus on us as individuals, our strengths and talents and how we can improve upon those for ourselves personally and to help us work as a team.” She continued, “the global meeting was a true team effort with everyone taking ownership and responsibility for their areas.”

A meeting like this does not come together overnight. As Karen mentioned, many people from different departments worked tirelessly as a team to bring this vision to life. “The planning starts early and there is so much that goes into it all! What will we discuss? What do we want everyone to get out of this? How can we show the out of country employees what California really is like in just three short days?” says Art Director, Nikol Drapeau. Planning and preparation began back in March to ensure that everything came together perfectly. There was even an office makeover in preparation for this meeting! Certainly, a lot of hard work went into making these meetings a great success.

The events of the Global Meeting began on Sunday afternoon, with our global sales reps being treated to a sailboat cruise in Marina Del Rey. With many of them hailing from outside of the United States, they had never experienced California this way. Of course, it was an amazing way to spend the afternoon. The weather was perfect (many of us worked on our tans), and we drank rosé as we got to know one another.

Later that evening, our group ventured over to Portuguese Bend beach in Palos Verdes, where dinner was catered for everyone and their families. Some of us channeled our inner kid and played cornhole on the sand as the sun sank lower towards the horizon. As the day wrapped, we indulged in a glass of wine while we watched the sun set over the ocean. It was an incredible way to kick off the next two days of jam packed meetings.

The First Day of Meetings…

With the quick arrival of Monday morning, we kicked off the meetings bright and early! The team enjoyed bagels and coffee while socializing with each other and settling into their seats. The first meeting of the day was an hour and a half presentation from the marketing team about our brand, how we’re evolving and what can be expected for the future. We were able to share successful marketing campaigns, share videos from past photoshoots and let everyone know how we are approaching social media going forward. Overall, it was a smash hit!

After the marketing presentation, we invited the Design Team to walk everyone through the European line for Spring/Summer 2019. This was a great opportunity to become familiar with the product. Additionally, we learned of new features being added to our shoes. Ladies, we can’t wait to share with you! So exciting!

Monday wrapped up with more meetings between the Sales Teams, as well as various team building activities. Do you remember the grade school project of wrapping up eggs in protective layers and dropping them from ladders? Only to hope they didn’t crack? Well, yeah… we did that. And it’s still super fun.

Monday evening, we were all invited to the Blowfish Malibu’s president’s home in the Pacific Palisades for dinner and drinks. We expected it to be a great time, of course. However, we did not expect to experience the most epic view of the coastline. (See pictures below!) We enjoyed great conversation, incredible food, and we even sang Happy Birthday to one of our team members. And in the end, we received a huge surprise… BIG news about the future of Blowfish Malibu.

The Second Day of Meetings…

On Tuesday, our large group was split up. Half of us went to a local hotel where we participated in team building activities for the day. Our European sales reps met us at the hotel after lunch, where we all engaged in more team building games brought to us by Feet First Events.

“Tuesday was an awesome day in my opinion and I loved our session with the Shinebright group! We really tapped into what each one of our strengths are and how it affects our work flow. Similarly, with the people we work with. What’s great is we each get to do three 1-hour private sessions with them. Such a treat! We ended the day with some interactive team building activities which were exhilarating to say the least,” concludes Nikol.

Check out the fun photos below!

Overall, we’re thrilled with how the three days of meetings and team building activities went. Everyone is going home feeling more prepared to handle their business, while having a better connection to their co-workers. In our books, that’s a roaring success!

We can’t wait for the next one!

Behind the Scenes of Our Fall/Winter 2018 Photoshoot!

At the beginning of May, we ventured out to the Westside to shoot our campaign for F/W 2018! Take a sneaky peek at the behind the scenes below…

If you are a regular reader of the Blowfish Malibu Journal, you know we love bringing you behind the scenes of our campaign photoshoots. (If you haven’t read them yet, check them out here!) Photoshoots are never easy; they involve a lot of effort, both physically and emotionally. Especially large campaign shoots like this one. Over the course of two days, our team ran all around Los Angeles getting everything together; doing it all from working with outside vendors, sorting out catering, styling models, and running across town to pick up permits at the (literal) the last minute.

This time around, we crossed our fingers that the weather would hold out, as a couple of days prior to the shoot, we dealt with rain storms and cloud cover. Seriously, just two days before the shoot, it was pouring at our headquarters in Culver City! Ultimately, we had perfect weather, fabulous locations and great people on set who made everything run smoothly. That being said, we still have plenty of time to have fun and enjoy the creative experience. Come on, who wouldn’t want to spend two days at the beach in the middle of the work week!?

We sat down with the resident Art Director at Blowfish Malibu, Nikol Drapeau, and asked her a couple of questions about prepping for the shoot. The biggest challenge for Nikol and her team? “The biggest challenge that we regularly face with photoshoots is trying to pair the shoes with outfits so we’re not cross-shooting the shoes for the same customer,” she says. “When we’re planning the shoes with outfits, they have to be different so the customer receives a variety of images.”

The customer in question? You(!) via our retailers. We sell directly to retail accounts like Amazon and Journeys so our team has to be aware of each individual account, as well as the customers (you again!) who shop with each of them. Everything we choose from the locations, to the models, to the styling, are selected with these specific retailers (ultimately you!) in mind.

Another challenge? “It can be hard to stay consistent with the theme. For example, we shot at El Matador State Beach and there’s only so many ways you can shoot there without it looking the same. It takes a team of creative people to come up with concepts that are different enough to keep the shots fresh and relevant.”

Despite all that, the biggest reward of photoshoots makes perfect sense. Nikol says: “The best part of all of this is getting to see the final images, once they come back to us from the photographer and his team. I always love that day that I get to go through all of them and see all of our hard work come into fruition!” Thanks for talking with us, Nikol!

Overall, the two-day shoot went perfectly and we’re so excited to see and share with you the finished product!

Insider tip: Keep an eye out for lots of shades of purples (specifically orchid!) as this color is going to be big for  Fall/Winter. We’re bringing out some fresh prints for our sneakers, which are all designed in-house by our design team. Also, we’re bringing back a classic all time fave! (But you’ll have to stay tuned to find out what style that is…)

Throughout the course of the shoots, we took a TON of behind the scenes footage, so enjoy our little sneak peek into what is coming in the near future! Enjoy, and if you have any questions about to creative process or questions for Nikol and the team, don’t hesitate to reach out and ask!
