Shoe Designer Spotlight: Meet Jannie Denney

We chat with Blowfish Malibu’s coolest shoe designer, Jannie Denney, in an exclusive interview!

Meet Jannie Denney, the “cool kid” of the Blowfish Malibu design team. She is responsible for our very popular and trendy sneaker designs over the last two years. Like many of our designers, Jannie didn’t set out to be a shoe designer. Originally she was an apparel designer and freelance artist in LA. But over time she realized her talent for shoe design and honed in on her craft. Now it’s easy to say that she is one of the best sneaker designers in the business. One thing about Jannie’s designs: expect the unexpected. Her vision is ecclectic, cool, and totally fresh. A few of her most popular designs include Marley and Play and we are lucky to have her as part of the Blowfish Malibu design team. We love you, Jannie!

Why did you become a shoe designer & how long have you been designing shoes?

Honestly, it was fluke how I ended up in footwear. I was a full-time freelance artist & apparel designer in LA and one of the random freelance accounts was to design soleplates and sketches upper for ESPRIT kids. I got pregnant with my first son and thought it was foolish for me to juggle so many accounts and decided to focus on the account that was simply the easiest and most fun to work on, and that was shoes. It’s all history from there. Once I focused on one account and craft, I felt I could eventually become great at it, instead of just “good”.

What do you enjoy doing when you aren’t designing shoes?

I try to spend as much time with my 3 kids as humanly possible, they feed my soul! I’m a true gypsy, I love to wander, so when I’m with the kids, I make sure to spend time in nature hiking & exploring. I spend so much time on the road that immersing myself with my kids and nature brings me balance. If I have extra time beyond that I’m always painting! Right now, I shop for unfinished random landscape paintings in thrift stores and then add strange random cartoon figures to them. It’s so much fun!

If you weren’t a shoe designer, what would you do?

I know this very well! I think about this often…
1. I would be an art teacher. Preferably grade school.
2. Director (I’m obsessed with film)
3. Interior Decorator
4. Painter

Do you have an all-time favorite Blowfish Malibu style?

I love my Marley. It’s a simple good basic style and that can be worn with just about any outfit.

How would you describe your personal style?

I’m a very ‘moody’ dresser, I dress according to my mood. I’m not very trendy or fashion forward, but I tend to lean towards comfortable classics- regardless of the look or trend I’m wearing, is has to be comfortable. I think the same can be said about the shoes I wear.

If you were an animal, what would you be?

Thai Tiger, no question.

What color is your aura?

I believe that a person’s aura is reflective of ones’ emotional state of mind and internal spirit. Mine usually hovers between a royal blue-purple and a soft lavender.

What’s your dream destination?

What’s the last song you played on repeat?

“Somebody” by Depeche Mode.

Thanks Jannie! We’ll catch up with you soon!
