Discovering Los Angeles: Santa Monica Pier Twilight Concert Series
Nothing beats relaxing on the beach with friends while listening to live music as the warm summer sun goes down. The feeling of bare feet on a beach blanket and a picnic basket with fresh bites and cooler full of cold drinks makes this place a heaven on earth. Amirite? That’s why one of our all-time favorite weekly summer events is the annual Twilight Concert series on the Santa Monica Pier. This iconic concert series was held every Thursday evening during the summer months and brings in local acts, indie bands, and sometimes even up-and-coming pop stars, from almost every genre of music.
It is quintessentially California and we just couldn’t miss out on one of LA’s favorite summer traditions. (It just wrapped its 33rd year!)
So what’s the story?
After one-third of the Santa Monica Pier was destroyed by winter storms in 1983, the annual summer concerts began to bring awareness to the pier’s reconstruction. The city and the nonprofit Santa Monica Pier Corporation has kept the tradition going ever since, making it a prominent part of the culture of Los Angeles and Southern California as whole.
What kind of music?
Each week celebrates a different popular music genre and this year’s impressive lineup ranged from seasoned artists including Eric Burdon & The Animals, to LA indie rockers Warpaint, and various EDM festival favorites. Up-and-coming artists with recent commercial success, like neo-soul R&B artist Khalid, are also well represented. Khalid’s hit single “Location” has already reached over 60 million views on YouTube, and he brought in a rumored crowd of 60,000 people(!) to his concert on the pier. Needless to say, this year did not disappoint.
If you went to any of the shows, we want to hear about it! Share your favorite Twilight Series stories in the comments. If you missed the pier concerts this year, be sure to mark your calendars for next year. We are already looking forward to Twilight 2018!
