Get to know Marcela Janer in a candid interview below:
Tell us about your role at Blowfish Malibu.
I am the Graphic Designer for our marketing department. I am responsible for continuously maintaining the company’s brand aesthetics, internally and externally. This includes reviewing, updating, and maintaining the company’s visual representation in all aspects of design including typography, composition, and color.
When did you first become interested in marketing?
I first became interested in marketing while I was in college, so I took a couple of marketing elective classes. I really enjoy how marketing has more creative avenues on hand than ever, from social media to online advertising, email marketing to so many others! Marketing offers me the freedom for a lot of creativity, media and technologies.
What did you do previously before joining the Blowfish Malibu team?
After graduating from college, I got an internship working for a Licensee of the Adidas brand and later I got hired full-time. I was there for almost 6 years! I worked as a Graphic Designer for their marketing team. While working there I created product inline catalogs for various seasons throughout the calendar year, created E-commerce Amazon A+ pages for product categories and maintained the photo library of seven Adidas product lines. After working there, I later worked for a brand agency doing a bit of freelance work and later found the amazing opportunity of joining Blowfish Malibu family!
How did you get started with Blowfish Malibu?
I applied for the position on LinkedIn about year ago! A few weeks later, I got an email from Karen (the VP of Marketing) and we set up a phone interview. I was brought in for an in-person interview – and I landed the position!
What projects at the brand have you been working on that you’re excited about? Can you tell us about them?
Prior to Covid-19 we launched a 4Earth event, that was really exciting. I helped design most of the signage, a booklet, cards and other presentation items. I loved seeing how the event came together and the positive impact it had in our recycling initiatives.
What do you like most about working in the fashion industry?
I love shoes! I really enjoy seeing how our sneakers are so colorful and fun!
What’s your favorite part of your job?
I love the creative freedom that I have to create our consumer and retailer emails. I also really enjoy creating our product catalogs, the best part is to create visually beautiful and fun graphics!
The Blowfish Malibu offices are in LA. What’s your favorite thing about the city?
The weather! I love the sun and warm weather. I love the diversity of cultures and the vast array of international cuisines.
Which is your favorite pair of Blowfish Malibu shoes?
I love so many of them, but if I had to choose it would be Play in Natural City Kitty Canvas.
What advice would you have for someone who’s trying to pursue the same career as you?
Practice makes perfect. You need to learn and practice with a variety of software programs like Photoshop and master your skills. Make sure to build your portfolio. One of the best ways is to have your own website and showcase a variety of your best work. And most importantly be patient with yourself. It takes time to become a great designer.
JUST FOR FUN

Loungewear and sweats!
Where are you from and how has that shaped you?

I moved to Colombia when I was about 4 years old lived there for a few years. Then I came back to LA and then moved back again when I was 15 years old. And then again when I was about 17 or 18 years old. I feel like I have my heart in two places, in LA and in Medellin. Maybe one day I will move back there again.

So many places! To name a few: Japan, Croatia, Iceland, Thailand, Vietnam
If you could have lunch with anyone, living or dead, who would it be?

After a good work out. I feel really proud of myself after I’ve exercised. It’s like I release all of my stress and anxiety, and I feel fresh.
