Blowfish Malibu Book Club: Winter Reads
Looking for a good book for the winter months? Here’s what we’re reading (and loving) right now.
I’m always on the hunt for a good book, especially in the chillier seasons. There’s nothing like cozying up to the fire with a warm blanket, cup of tea, and a great book. A good book can transport you to a different time and place with characters so detailed, you’d think they’re alive. It can suck you into its story and not let you go until you turn the final page. Plus, reading is overwhelmingly good for you. When you read, you are working out your brain and increasing memory power and smarts. So next time you reach for your phone to scroll through your social channels, try a book instead.
If you don’t know where to start or what book to get, let us help! Here are four books we’re loving right now.
The Kite Runner
Written by Khaled Hosseini, The Kite Runner is a #1 New York Times Best Seller and a must read for everyone. It’s a story about an unlikely friendship between a wealthy boy and his father’s servant’s son. This powerful story of friendship transports the reader to Afghanistan at a time of massive destruction and change.
The Handmaid’s Tale
Many of us are familiar with the Hulu hit show of the same name, but did you know it was based off of a best selling book? Written by Margaret Atwood, The Handmaid’s Tale is a speculative fiction roller coaster ride starring main character, Offred, as she is in the fight of her life. It takes place in the Republic of Gilead, where women are not allowed to read – or basically have any power at all – but are only valued if their ovaries are viable. This story is horrific at points, but also shows the overwhelming strength of certain characters.
Into the Water
If you are looking for a murder mystery read that’ll have you gripping your seat, look no further than Into the Water by Paula Hawkins. Hawkins transports you to a witchy English town where two women have been found at the bottom of the river. But they’re not the only who have met this fate. This novel delivers a twisting, suspenseful read. Definitely a page turner!
Written by Emma Cline and recipient of many best selling awards, The Girls is a coming of age story for women in Northern California in the late 1960s. With reviews consisting of words like spellbinding, extraordinary, hypnotic, savage, gorgeous, astonishing, superbly written, intensely consuming, and thrilling, how can you not read this book?
What are you reading right now and loving? We’d love to know!
